Make Listening Safe

This year, Hearing Awareness Week runs from 1 – 7 March 2020, with the theme “Make Listening Safe”

-

Don’t be an “Egghead” – Protect your hearing! Once it’s gone, it won’t come back!!

In simple terms, what happens when the volume is too loud on your Ipods, Walkman & TV headsets is that the tiny hair cells in your inner ear will wave around like a “typhoon!” if the loudness is in short bursts & the volume is turned down giving them a rest then they’ll recover BUT if the loudness goes on too long & without rest, then many of the cells will lay down & die – they WON’T recover.. causing various degrees of hearing loss!

Make Listening Safe. Keep ear plugs handy for any situations; if you’re a budding musician be sure to wear custom-made earplugs; if you work in noisy environments wear hearing protection. Hearing protection education applies to all ages & specially starting from school age.

During HAW, Hearing Assn office will be open extra hours for any inquiries: Monday 9.30 – 12.30pm; Tuesday 1.00 – 5.00pm & Friday 9.30am – 3.30pm.

Do not let hearing loss limit you

March is Hearing Awareness Month, so now may be a good time to get you or your loved ones hearing checked out. People of all ages can be affected by hearing loss – if you suspect yourself or someone you know may not be hearing as well as they should be, Toni Naera at Life Unlimited can help.

Hearing loss is invisible and often does not arouse public sympathy.

However, it can have a devastating impact on a person’s home, work and social life, leading to social isolation and difficulty in carrying out everyday activities that involve communication.

Anyone affected by hearing loss may benefit from seeing Toni, a qualified hearing therapist with Life Unlimited, who is based at Life Unlimited in Hamilton.

Life Unlimited has joined forces with the World Health Organization to highlight that timely and effective interventions can ensure that people with hearing loss are able to achieve their full potential.

Whether you are starting from the beginning, which would involve a screening test to see how your hearing is, or further on in your journey and have hearing aids but are still struggling, Toni can help.

The service is Ministry of Health funded and is free to New Zealand citizens and residents aged 16 years and over.

A hearing therapist works with you, considers your circumstances, your life and the way you live it. The service is independent. Life Unlimited does not sell or fit hearing aids, but gives independent advice about using hearing aids and other listening devices. Solutions could include referral to another health professional, sessions to help you improve your communication skills or use of your hearing aids, tinnitus management, communication strategies, speech reading including lip reading, auditory training including exercises to improve listening skills and auditory memory, and assistive devices.

For a free appointment give Toni a call on 0800 008 011.
