Big year for Masterton Motorplex
The sound of revving engines and smell of burning rubber will be on display one last time at Masterton Motorplex this weekend, as another successful drag racing season comes to a close.
The 50th NZ Nationals will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the popular Masterton drag strip.
Masterton Motorplex event coordinator Bob Wilton said it had been a busy year.
‘‘We just had the Auckland Invasion, which was the biggest public attendance in our 20 year history,’’ he said. ‘‘It’ll be pretty hard to beat. ‘‘It’s definitely good to see the turnout.’’ He said this weekend’s NZ Nationals would see plenty of rare and exciting cars ‘‘come out of the woodwork,’’ some of which haven’t been racing for around ten years.
‘‘There will be some funny cars from down south, some top alcohol cars ... there will be plenty entering on the day, so we’ll see how many turn up,’’ Wilton said.
As the only specialist drag strip in the lower North Island, Masterton Motorplex is a mecca for drag racing enthusiasts throughout the region.
It’s also developed quite a reputation throughout the country, as fans of the sport will attest and this weekend’s event proves.
Last month’s successful Auckland Invasion was a much anticipated round of the International Hot Rod Association.
It had proved to be one of the track’s busiest events, with packed stands and just under 200 entries.
Wilton said while visitor numbers weren’t officially counted, there was no doubt it had been a busy season.
‘‘I’d say there were probably between 3-5,000 people at the events this year,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s definitely been a successful year. It’ll be a bit of a hard act to follow.’’
