Waitaki Herald - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS -

I’ve been fortunate to have been spending some time with students this week, at the New Zealand Broadcasting School. All bright eyed young things, passionate about news and journalism and excited about the careers they’re carving out for themselves.

It’s deeply ironic, given I’m currently working through the closure of three community newspapers, but it’s also inspirational and encouraging that there are still young reporters coming through to take up the torch.

It’s eerily familiar, as things haven’t changed all that much in the 20 years since I was there. But it’s also quite different - we certainly didn’t have to worry about online stories and social engagement.

While a part of me is tempted to advise them to get themselves an HT licence as well, just to be safe, the bigger part is utterly delighted there are smart, compassionate, brave and idealistic young people ready to tell great stories, ask hard questions and make a difference.
