Track now a stepped boardwalk
Mangorei Track in Egmont National Park, Taranaki, is not a muddy track anymore. It is a stepped board walk with 3400 wooden steps and suitable for a wide range of the community walkers , says Ian McAlpine. Pouakai Tarns on the Pouakai Ranges is a distance on the either Mangorei Track or the Pouakai Crossing Trek is an all year round option.
Treks just need to be a little more prepared for winter conditions as there can be ice on the tracks and they should be aware of the short daylight hours especially in the forest.
This photo was taken showing the tarn up there frozen over but the mountain was clear and the temperature at the tarns was below zero.
Worth the effort of walking up the five kilometers to check out the spectacular views.
