Whanganui Midweek

This is jazz for everybody

-

By KEN CHERNOFF President, Whanganui Jazz Club

The Whanganui Jazz Club opens its 2019 season tonight with a concert by Unwind. These three master musicians come to Whanganui midway through a nationwide tour.

Formed in 2014, the ensemble has two records to their credit. Their collaboration produces music that is unique, creative and harmonious.

The almost flute-like voicing of Hayden Chisholm’s alto saxophone and the lyrical compositions of Norman Meehan are supported by the bass lines of Paul Dyne. This is a thoughtful, sensitive music that can be enjoyed by music lovers of all persuasions. If you enjoy music in the Western Classical tradition and think that you might like some forms of jazz, this is the concert you want to attend.

Unwind plays music from their recently recorded album Orange, released by Rattle Records. Here is some classic Kiwi contemporary music with melodies and improvisations that are easily accessible. There is a certain thoughtful serenity that underlies their performance.

This is the club’s first meeting of 2019, and memberships are available at the door. General admission is $20, and members pay $10.

Doors open at 5pm at Lucky Bar & Kitchen, 53 Wilson St. The music begins at 6pm. All enquires to Ken 022 431 5434.
