New to Sports Hall of Fame

An internatio­nally-renowned golfer, jockey and wrestler are the latest inductees to the Whanganui Sports Hall of Fame. The successful nominees – pictured from left: Simon Owen, Brent Thomson and Pat O’Connor – were announced at the Whanganui Sports Awards on Friday, 22 November 2019. Whanganui-born Simon Owen won 17 internatio­nal tournament­s during his profession­al career and represente­d New Zealand five times in team events.

Son of noted Whanganui horse trainer, the late Kevin Thomson, Brent Thomson became a member of the New Zealand and Australian Racing Halls of Fame after winning more than 2500 races.

Pat O’Connor, born in Raetihi, was a world profession­al wrestling champion for 31 months and won a silver medal at the 1950 Auckland Empire Games.
