New to Sports Hall of Fame
An internationally-renowned golfer, jockey and wrestler are the latest inductees to the Whanganui Sports Hall of Fame. The successful nominees – pictured from left: Simon Owen, Brent Thomson and Pat O’Connor – were announced at the Whanganui Sports Awards on Friday, 22 November 2019. Whanganui-born Simon Owen won 17 international tournaments during his professional career and represented New Zealand five times in team events.
Son of noted Whanganui horse trainer, the late Kevin Thomson, Brent Thomson became a member of the New Zealand and Australian Racing Halls of Fame after winning more than 2500 races.
Pat O’Connor, born in Raetihi, was a world professional wrestling champion for 31 months and won a silver medal at the 1950 Auckland Empire Games.
