Whanganui Port project progesses
Whanganui District Council’s portion of the Te Pūwaha port revitalisation work is 53 percent completed, with plans to lodge consent before Christmas and go to market for contractors for the port build in early 2022.
The Victory Shed demolition (pictured), part of the Te Pūwaha Whanganui Port revitalisation, is on track to be completed by Christmas.
Asbestos from the shed roof was carefully removed during September and October and the area received WorkSafe clearance before demolition continued.
As part of work to rebuild and revitalise the port, demolition materials will be salvaged and considered for future reuse where possible.
At the Victory Shed site, concrete walls will be broken down and the concrete crushed for reuse as part of the site rehabilitation throughout the project. The area that is being cleared at the site will receive full land remediation so that it can house future tenanted buildings and facilities within the new marine precinct.
Although the area is a pre-1900 site, and there have been no archaeological finds at the site to date, the Victory Shed has had a rich history. Before demolition began a photographic record was created to preserve the Victory Shed’s iconic contribution to Whanganui’s local history.
