Divine idyll

Weekend Herald - Canvas - - CONTENTS -

Lighten the load from bulky winter layers and start anew — spring has arrived, or at least in regards to fashion’s circle of life. Deliveries are trickling into stores for the new season and it’s an opportunity to at least preview what you could be wearing as the weather warms up — if not right now — as you escape to more tropical climes. But never mind the superfluous fabrics of gaudy kimonos or muumuu dresses – think Palm Spring in the 50s or exactly what Maggie Smith’s busy-body character Mrs Castle wore in Evil Under the Sun. It’s a crisp, mid-century take on resort dressing consisting of well-cut summer dresses in crisp cotton and structured palazzo pants that slip on easily over togs. It’s the way to look polished even when you’re off duty and, like New Zealand designer Emilia Wickstead’s stunning resort 2018 collection (shown at Sydney Fashion Week in collaboration with Matches), it’s a chance to contemplate holiday-wear in 2018. You can never be too nostalgic for those simple days in the sunshine with a straw boater and a hardback novel.
