Take me out

The sometimes maligned ‘going out’ top is making a triumphant return

While it might seem perplexing that a song released in 2008 is considered a throwback these days, the reality is that it was an entire decade ago. Time flies. It’s not unusual for fashions to come and go and this time we’re looking to the mid-to-late noughties for inspiration, an era that put the spotlight on high/low dressing with the spangly, fun, party top worn with jeans. The going out uniform was often accessorised with a pair of mules and a mini purse (preferably a Fendi “Baguette”) slung nonchalantly over the shoulder. While there’s whiff of irony with the return of noughties trends right now, the “going out” top is one that has some relevance with 2018’s preference for casual glamour. Here’s our pick of the best tops to go out in, be it a block of colour, a riotous print or maybe one with embellishment for a little extra pizazz. Just add jeans.
