The humble T-shirt goes chic

As streetwear becomes ubiquitous several luxury brands are repurposing the T-shirt as an easy, entry-level item. Retailers and designers have reworked it by using irreverent prints, positive slogans and flourishes of pop culture nostalgia. Local stalwart Nom*D has reissued its popular Comic tee, a cult favourite and available in a range of colourways, providing the perfect contrast to a floaty summer skirt or a partner to a pair of blue jeans. The T-shirt has long been used as a quickfire way to get a message across, from Katharine Hamnett’s influential political activist slogans emblazoned on T-shirts during the 80s to Frank Ocean’s antidiscrimination T-shirt featuring the words “Why be racist, sexist, homophobic, or transphobic when you could just be quiet?”. But a well-selected T-shirt also offers up cues about your personality without having to utter a word, from art-inspired prints, band T-shirts (only wear these if you really love the band), or your sense of humour – like Victoria Beckham’s 10th anniversary print T-shirts featuring Posh Spice stuck inside one of her own shopping bags. $329, $219. $129. $377,
