This is the Canvas family issue. As we were preparing to send the magazine to the printer, we heard the news that Eva McGauley died on Sunday, November 18, aged 18.

Eva shared her story with Canvas in December 2016. Back then, facing a terminal diagnosis, she said: “I decided I wanted to help as many people as possible. Like, to do what I always planned to do. But just really fast.” Herald readers opened their hearts to Eva, donating thousands to her fundraising campaign for a sexual abuse assistance programme. Her advocacy work has continued with Eva’s Wish, which she described as “a platform for young people to become successful activists and to be able to create change in the areas they are most passionate about”.

We are all better people when we view the world as a family.
