It’s officially the first day of summer and — gird your loins — it’s the start of the silly season. If you are already over the mall and the listless crowds of shoppers, you might like to take a look at our edible gift ideas by Annabel Langbein. She provides an antidote to the avalanche of pressure to buy, buy, buy to a soundtrack of Jingle Bells on high rotate. Jars and tins of goodness rule.

Also if you’re into Christmas cake, it’s your last chance to make that today, so you have time to feed it its essential nutrients.

Or just take a load off, grab that mug with “Keep Calm and Carry On”, fill it with tea or brandy and read the fascinating musings on a psychedelic future, by Russell Brown; and a portrait of Steve Braunias as a pale, young, aspiring poet.

Last week, we featured the magnificent hand-drawn art by Daniel Tippett for our cover story by Kim Knight. We didn’t dot the i’s, or cross the t’s, clearly. It’s Tippett, not Tippet. Aroha mai, Dan.
