From the editor

Weekend Herald - Canvas - - CONTENTS -

There is a pleasing symmetry to this week’s cover story. Nearly 20 years ago, Babiche Martens, who shot this week’s cover, photographed an emerging hip-hop artist, a star in waiting, Ladi6, at the Civic Theatre for ... Canvas magazine. As we walked this week to Coco’s Cantina, where we shot the cover, we talked about this and Ladi said how she’d changed — radically — in terms of how she saw herself. Back then, she said, she felt insecure and uncertain how to move in the spotlight and under the lens. She talks this week about having a kind of internal revolution — not caring so much anymore about how she is perceived. There is often so much focus on the so-called perils of ageing, of wrinkles or whatever. But the sense of empowerment that comes with getting older far out weighs such malaise. In the final issue of the year, our cover story is a reminder to shake off the old.

Meri Kirihimete.

Have a wonderful break and see you when Canvas returns on January 12.

Nga mihi nui.
