Welcome back to the first issue of Canvas magazine for 2019. In December, in our “people of the year” cover story, we featured scholar Anne-Marie Brady, who has suffered a series of unpleasant and mysterious events since she published a paper detailing China’s foreign influence activities. So little was known of Brady herself — and like many academics, she seemed to exist entirely within the framework of her powerful and influential research. But what of her personal story? What motivates her and why won’t she capitulate? Greg Bruce visited her in her Christchurch home and she told her extraordinary story.

Also this week, we start a new column by Beck Eleven — People and their pets. They are vignettes, small love stories and, this week, actor Michelle Langstone talks of the bond she has with her cat Frances. They are photographed by Doug Sherring.
