SIGNED UNDER PROTEST
The feminist history of Aotearoa has largely been dominated by Kate Sheppard but few of us could name the other voices in the fight for women’s rights in this country. Artist Katy Soljak is championing the story of activist and school teacher Miriam Soljak with her exhibition of mixed-media acrylic paintings, Signed Under Protest, at Waiheke Community Art Gallery. Miriam Soljak was a mother of seven who had her citizenship revoked by law for marrying a foreigner. She devoted her life to repealing that law as well as campaigning against mandatory conscription for men and in favour of female access to contraception. She also helped start NZ Family Planning. In her words: “If all the housework is done, dear, you’re neglecting the movement.” Hop on a ferry to Waiheke and stop by the gallery for some art and a little history lesson.
Until October 18, daily 10am-4pm (artist talk every Sunday at 10.30am). Waiheke Community Art Gallery, 2 Karora Rd, Waiheke Island.
