- Big changes for Lotto Spy law overhaul Long jail term possible College fire ‘ accidental’ Murder charge

It remains unclear how a piece of what was thought to be freshly- skinned dog flesh ended up on Takapuna Beach on Wednesday. Local man Brent McCarty found the skin, which he said was more than a metre long, on the beach at 7.45am. Police said last night they were unable to provide any updates on the investigation. Changes have been announced to Lotto, including the introduction of a division seven winner category and bigger Powerball prizes. The changes will come at an increased cost of 10 cents per line, with the price of Powerball to rise by 20c per line. The changes take effect from April 2. An overhaul of the legislation governing the spy agencies is set to go ahead next month after the Government agreed to Labour’s call for changes to ensure stronger safeguards before agencies can spy on New Zealanders. The only minority view in the report was from the Green Party which said it provided for “new, intrusive powers” it did not believe were justified. A farmer who bashed his heavilypregnant ex- partner so hard with a baseball bat that it snapped in half became enraged after she wanted to keep the baby. Christopher James Buick, known as Chris, now faces a lengthy jail term after the “frenzied attack” in Christchurch earlier this month, which left the 23- week pregnant woman with a fractured skull, severe facial bruising and lacerations, and a broken eye socket. The fire that razed Long Bay College’s technology block was accidental, say inspectors. The school’s technology block is in ruins after the fire raced through the large building just after 2.30am yesterday. A man has been charged with murder over the death of Haumoana resident Mark Geoffrey Beale. Yesterday Detective Inspector Mike Foster said a 19- year- old Hastings man had been charged with the murder of Beale. He will appear in court today.
