Former ASB boss remembered as inspirational leader
Former ASB bank chief executive Hugh Burrett has died.
Burrett was CEO of the bank from 2001 to 2008 and had a career of more than 40 years with the bank.
Barbara Chapman, current ASB chief executive, said Burrett achieved an enormous amount of success during his time with the bank.
“He had the unique distinction of joining the bank as a cadet and rising through the organisation, working across a range of different areas to eventually become chief executive.”
She said Burrett helped transform ASB from a regional, retail bank into a nationwide, full- service operation.
“Under Hugh’s leadership, ASB achieved unprecedented growth and became a significant contributor to the New Zealand economy.”
Chapman said Burrett was a great mentor and inspirational leader who was widely admired for his passion and ability to engage with people across all levels of the organisation.
“Hugh is fondly remembered by his many former colleagues and leaves a lasting legacy of success at ASB.”
Former ASB chief executive Sir Ralph Norris said Burrett was a very special person who he valued as a colleague and a friend.
“His people skills and customer service focus were second to none.”
Burrett is survived by his wife Sue and three children.
