The former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee has claimed that an unethical agreement was signed by the party and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, helping her to win the nomination over Bernie Sanders.

Donna Brazile disclosed the agreement in a new book called Hacks: The Inside Story of the Break-ins and Breakdowns that Put Donald Trump in the White House.

Brazile said she investigated after hacked committee emails were published indicating the nomination process had been rigged.

She wrote: “By September 7, 2016, the day I called Bernie, I had found my proof and it broke my heart.”

She described finding a document which was an agreement between the DNC and Clinton’s campaign made in August 2015. It said the Clinton campaign would “control the party’s finances, strategy, and all the money raised”.

The party had been in debt since the 2012 presidential campaign.

Brazile wrote: “The campaign had the DNC on life support, giving it money every month to meet its basic expenses. The funding arrangement was not illegal but it sure looked unethical. If the fight had been fair, one campaign would not have control of the party before the voters had decided which one they wanted to lead. This was not a criminal act, but as I saw it, it compromised the party’s integrity.” A lizard that can grow to be 2.5m long has been found in Southern California, thousands of kilometres from its native land, and authorities think it’s a pet gone astray. The 1.5m long crocodile monitor was spotted sunning itself on top of a hedge on Thursday in the backyard of a Riverside home. The crocodile monitor is a relative of the famous Komodo dragon. It’s native to Papua New Guinea and Indonesia — not California — but it is legal to own them in the state. It’s green and yellow with big claws, a long tail and a forked tongue. The big lizard is now being held by Riverside County’s animal services division. If the owner doesn’t claim it, the monitor will be sent to a sanctuary for exotic animals.

Four New Jersey police officers were charged criminally yesterday over a June car chase that ended with officers kicking and dragging a burning bystander. Prosecutors said a grand jury returned charges, including aggravated assault, against Jersey City police Lieutenant Keith Ludwig and officers M.D. Khan, Eric Kosinski and Francisco Rodriguez. Khan and Kosinski also are charged with attempted murder. On June 4, the officers chased a man whose car resembled one used in a shooting. That car crashed, setting off a fire that engulfed a vehicle not involved in the chase. A video shows the driver of the second vehicle, Miguel Feliz, exiting his car with his clothes on fire before being kicked by the officers.
