After dog of a day the cats want to play

-

The street lights are on, a tabby comes out and winds around our legs looking for a bit of conversation and a pat. We oblige, “See you later, Billy,” and head for the walkway.

Next, a shadow races ahead into the long grass.

It’s ginger puss, whose name we don’t know. “It’s all right puss, we wouldn’t hurt you.” And we wouldn’t. Gradually we’re getting to know each other, give us another three or four evenings.

Half a minute later a teenage black and white scoots from the footpath through a gap in the fence to apparent safety.

Our walk is short and back home we’re greeted by the neighbourhood favourite rolling on the warm path, begging for attention. Across the road another ginger puss is walking down a drive.

The word has gone out, the best time for cat committee meetings is the evenings when all the dogs in the neighbourhood are inside, asleep in their baskets.

A brief word

Why is it the Prime Minister seems hell bent on interfering in Australia’s domestic affairs and opening the doors for terrorists to gain access to New Zealand.

A. J. Petersen, Kawerau.

I’m still waiting for a census access code, like a lot of other people by the sound of it. I think we are going to find that Auckland’s population has suddenly gone down dramatically. Pamela Russell, Orakei.

Goodness me, what a silly little country we have become. Comments on Simon Bridges’ accent is a case in point. We need to focus on how he performs.

Patricia Mangham, Snells Beach.

I wish people wouldn’t point out that the new National Party leader has an impediment, after all, Paula Bennett was also deputy to Bill English.

Allan Gyde, Tauranga.

With all the outrage over David Seymour’s sexist T-Shirt surely the greater obscenity is the lack of conscience about killing sentient animals, or the impact of the animal industrial complex on the climate. Paul Judge, Hamilton.

Bonus Bonds should be drawn every week for a million dollars. One million once a month is not good enough any more. The ANZ must be making millions in interest. Perhaps a mass exodus of funds might make them think. Liz Leach. Milford.

I don’t understand why potential deaths from influenza are receiving such emphasis. At worst this can represent a few dozen a year whereas lethal driving practices kill that many in a few weeks.

Rod Lyons, Muriwai.

It’s about time we stopped fussing about politicians’ looks. The most effective are not necessarily the best looking and vice versa. John Clements, Orewa.

People of Auckland, why on earth are you putting up with a tiny percentage of the population stopping access to the best views? There is a huge number of people who don’t have a disabled badge but cannot or will not walk up steep hills. Richard Amery, Rotorua.

How pleasant it is to have Cynthia Morahan presenting the morning programme on the Concert radio recently. Bright, breezy, cheerful and articulate. Let’s hear more of her.

R. Howell, Onehunga.

Peter Culpan states Jacinda comes across as someone you would be happy to buy a second hand car from. Trouble is you don’t know what you are getting until you look under the bonnet.

P. Salvador, West Harbour.
