THE DEFIANT ONES

This addictive doco charts the rise of Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine, two artists from different worlds whose lives intersect with billion-dollar results. There’s plenty of Apple and Beats 1 showboatin­g, but there’s amazing footage: watch out for Dre’s first studio session with Eminem and a cameo from New Zealand’s own Zane Lowe.

AMERICAN VALHALLA

Here’s a music doco with a difference. American Valhalla was made with the intention of showcasing the making of Iggy Pop’s 2016 record Post Pop Depression. Instead, it focuses on the truly touching friendship between Iggy Pop and the record’s producer, Josh Homme.

WHITNEY: CAN I BE ME

Nick Broomfield’s 2017 doco is the better of two films charting the stunning rise and dramatic fall of Whitney Houston, made following her drug-related death in 2012. Comprised of plenty of interview footage, it’s the chats with Houston — including her “crack is whack” quip with Diane Sawyer in 2002 — that really stand out.

Two documents a pop star lacking in self-awareness. But there’s good reason: Gaga puts herself through physical and mental anguish. You’ll come out the other side as conflicted as she seems to be.

UB40: PROMISES AND LIES

During the 80s, UB40 had a stunning run, becoming one of the most-played radio acts with hits like Red Red Wine and I Got You Babe. We all know the legal battles that split the band into two separate touring entities but this doco lays clear just how bitter the dispute has become — and how much it’s cost them.
