Art of the Week

- TJ McNamara

The inexplicable and the enigmatic feature in this curious painting of a modern interior. Much is conventional. Big windows give a glimpse of the garden and the glazing above the fireplace is adapted from a conservatory. The perspective that defines the space is effective but has its oddities, notably the opening into the corridor on the right of the stone wall. It is grey and dismal, with shadows on the wall. The carpet is remarkably fluid and thrusting. The firelight in the chimney comes down like sunlight rather than going up. Strangest of all is the vivid cloak spread on the stone wall and pedestal with the feathered headdress speaking of rituals at odds with the architecture of the room. Or are they just collectors' items? The thought-provoking atmosphere and sharp design of this painting shift it from illustration into art.
