Takeout stakeout

- Chris Schulz

IN: In just two years, Tiger Burger has become an essential addition to Grey Lynn. That’s been its suburb of choice since expanding from its food truck roots to a fully fledged eatery in 2016. And there it’s stayed, refusing to expand or franchise, just doing great things day in and day out, and doing those things very, very well. Their not-sosecret ingredient is kimchi, fermented inhouse and added to almost everything on their menu. It was Friday, we were heading towards Grey Lynn, so we put an order in through their excellent website. Easy peasy.

OUT: While waiting for our kimcheese burger (beef, cheese and kimchi, $14.50), dubu burger (tofu, mayo, $14), Seoulful chicken bites ($14.90), small fries ($5) and banana doughnuts ($8), they offered us water while we waited. We could have ordered a drink from their bar, if we’d had time. It was busy, with almost every table full, proving Tiger Burger still has plenty of bite.

THE TAKEAWAY: The kimcheese is their signature burger and it didn’t disappoint, soft buns full of deliciousness, while the dobu means vegetarians definitely don’t miss out here. Their fried chicken with yang nyum glaze and honey garlic mayo delivered little bites of heaven. Everything was on point, including the mini banana doughnuts, which came with a coconut condensed milk dipping sauce. All in all, Tiger Burger will make you purr like a content pussycat.
