Art of the Week

- TJ McNamara

Terry Stringer's sold-out show contains much that is familiar: strong, solid columns of figures which contain several images moulded into the sculptured, monumental shape. This feature of his art, changing the reference of the image as the viewer moves round the work, emphasises the threedimensional nature of sculpture. This work is a homage to the famous sculptor Giacometti and his tall, bleakly thin figures but it does not imitate the elder artist's agitated surfaces and existential angst. It incorporates a new feature whereby Stringer incises forms into the surface rather than moulding them on top. One view reveals Giacometti's profile, spectacles and all, as you move around, you see his hands at work. They work as an emblem for Giacometti's passion for his frequent model, his wife.
