Glimpse of rare and wonderful

- — Tony Verdon

Driven this week has given readers and viewers a rare close-up view into the world of rare supercars, partly thanks to Auckland businessman and entreprenuer Grant Baker.

Ahead of next week’s Big Boys Toys event, Baker talked to us about his collection of 11 Ferraris, including a Ferrari 812 Superfast that will be on display at the event.

He is the subject of this week’s Me and My Car, talking about why he is raising funds for charity and how he came to collect so many rare Italian supercars.

Earlier in the week we featured another rarity, one of only two Ford GTs in the country, which will also be on display at Big Boys Toys. There are videos featuring both cars on Driven.co.nz.

Big Boys Toys is on at the ASB Showgrounds in Epsom, from Friday to Sunday.

This is a bumper 40-page edition of Driven featuring two other amazing new models that reflect the buying public’s swing towards SUVs — the Lamborghini Urus on the cover and the new Rolls Royce Cullinan SUV, which turned heads on its way to the launch at Muriwai this week. Liz Dobson was the first New Zealand motoring journalist to drive the Cullinan on local roads (p21, 23).

The mere thought of either brand producing an SUV would have been laughed off just a decade ago.

We also feature another of the finalists in the AA Driven New Zealand Car of the Year for 2018, the Kia Stinger GT. If you haven’t already voted for your pick among the 10 finalists, do it now, and be in to win an eight-day Fiji cruise for two.
