Takeout stakeout

- Chris Schulz

IN: Dominion Rd is mostly known for dumplings these days, so much so that we’d entirely forgotten about Gorgeous Pizza. It’s been there for what seems like forever, and the menu doesn’t seem to have changed since we last visited, years ago. Each of the eatery’s New York-style pizzas is named after a supermodel or actress, from the Kate Moss to the Lucy Liu. They don’t make any sense: how did the Gisele get garlic and pepperoni sausage on it? Doesn’t Gisele follow a plant-based diet? And it’s best to avoid the website, which features model-type women posing with pizza. Make an effort please. It’s 2018.

OUT: : We ordered by phone: a large margherita ($11), a large Scarlett ($25.50) and home-made pesto pasta ($16.50). It was an early Thursday evening and only two tables were full, so we perched at the bar built around the giant pizza oven and watched the chef go to work. It was entertaining: as the pizzas come out, they’re brushed with olive oil, then sprinkled with extra toppings. Our Scarlett was layered with rocket, basil and prosciutto after it was cooked. It smelt divine, and looked delish.

THE TAKEAWAY: Despite the dodgy names, the pizzas were stunning: the bases crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and the toppings were perfect. We loved the collision of melty cheese, salty prosciutto and fresh herbs. Full marks for the pizza but the pasta was another story: the spaghetti was nowhere close to al dente, and the pesto was so sickly sweet it seemed they’d mistakenly drizzled honey over it instead of olive oil. Next time, we’ll go for the pizzas, skip the pasta, and pray those pizza names have evolved into something more modern.
