Super-human Fijians

-

Thanks to some observant viewers and the quality of referee microphones, we’ve been able to get a nice insight in Fiji’s attitude in the dying minutes of their historic rugby win over France last weekend. With the French camped on the Fiji line and pressing for a converted try that would earn a draw, the following words were heard loud and clear: “Ratou a tamata wale ga, kedatou a kai Viti.” According to Twitter (always a reliable source for these sorts of thing) that best translates to “They're only human, let’s show them we are Fijians”. The onfield microphones also picked up this from French captain Mathieu Bastareaud at the end: “Who do we think we are? We beat Argentina and we think we're something special. We have to start from scratch now and we're at rock bottom. Because we're pathetic, shameful, we have to be aware of that.” Also proving that Fijians have superhuman powers was Special Constable Atama Bose from the small town of Labasa. Asked by the local newspaper for his view on the Fiji-France game, he was quoted as saying: “I think Fiji will win against France 21-14.” The final score was, of course, 21-14 to Fiji, and Bose — or Nostra-bose-us — is now the town oracle. One more thing: The Fiji players also cleaned up their own dressing room post-match.
