- Black Sticks into Cup playoffs Harbour, Auckland make semis Oosthuizen leads Open

The men’s Black Sticks scored two goals in the final quarter to snatch a

2-2 draw with Spain and keep alive their World Cup hopes yesterday. After Spain scored in each of the first two quarters, Hayden Phillips pulled a goal back in the 50th minute. New Zealand removed their goalkeeper and won a first penalty corner in the

56th minute, which Kane Russell dragflicked low into the goal to level the scores. The result eliminated Spain and qualified New Zealand for the first knockout round, with England or Ireland their likeliest opponents on Tuesday.

Manawatu-Wanganui will play Auckland and Canterbury will play North Harbour at the women’s Toro Interprovincial golf semifinals at Waitikiri Golf Club in Christchurch. Playing an impressive Wellington side who were leading earlier in the week, the young Manawatu-Wanganui side stepped up when it counted and won in style, with No 2 Zhuoyi Hu chipping in to earn the final point. This takes them a step closer to their first Interprovincial title since 1960.

Louis Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion, led the South African Open by a shot after a 9-under 62 in the first round yesterday. Oosthuizen, playing his home Open for the first time in eight years, made a brilliant start at Randburg Golf Club with nine birdies and no bogeys. Oosthuizen was one stroke ahead of American Kurt Kitayama, who won the Mauritius Open last weekend, and Zambian Madalitso Muthiya.
