Chinese rev up MG for re-run

- TONY VERDON

New Zealand already has one of the most competitive new car markets in the world, but the competition is about to intensify.

Chinese giant SAIC Motor is resurrecting the MG brand, setting up dealerships throughout the country.

The company is determined to have dealers in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and in many regional centres.

The group plays on the hallowed history and romance of the previously British sports car marque, but will expand the MG range with a hatchback and small crossover models.

New Zealand operations are being headed by a former Mercedes Vans boss, Anthony MacLean, who apart from being a motor industry veteran is also (appropriately for MG) Britishborn.

The brand is determined to become a significant player in the industry and build buyer trust by offering five-year warranties and roadside assistance with its new vehicles.

With models starting at $17,990 plus on-road costs, MG is also clearly determined to be competitive.

Already NBL fans will have seen the MG logo on the court during televised Breakers games this season, and that logo is now certain to become even more familiar.

The brand is already reporting strong sales increases in Australia.

Its appearance here means more competition for new vehicle sellers, and even greater choice for new vehicle buyers.

Driven is eager to road test the new models once the vehicles are available.
