What I’d do

- Michelle Powles Co-writers Michele Powles and Renee Liang have written a raw and uplifting book about motherhood called When We Remember to Breathe, which will be published on May 1 (Magpie Pulp, $25).

1 I am a mother of two destruction specialists. I should have known that they would come with sporting commitments, but I chose to pretend they would be leisurely sleep-in children. I am a fool and happy to admit it. Saturday means getting up in the dark and being on the soccer pitch BEFORE 8am. Worse, I don’t even drink coffee. Luckily, the Glen Eden Crafty Baker is just down the road so breakfast is a just-baked croissant.

2 Saturday night. My mate Ben Bayly is opening a new restaurant this year and as I’m the best vegetarian he knows he has proclaimed that he will be testing snippets of the menu on me. Life is hard I know. The last time he did this was for a new vegeburger and OMG it was all herbs and heaven. The theme of the new restaurant is top secret so I have no clue what I’ll get to taste but I do know that this guy is passionate about food. Talk to him for a minute and you get caught up in his ravenous passion for this land; the herbs secreted in the bush I’ve never heard of; the hidden riches he finds scavenging with his kids. Saturday, I’m heading to The Grounds where he’s making me a special dish of wild mushrooms foraged by him and his daughter.

3 My great new publisher is donating a portion of the profits from my and Renee Liang’s new book to Good Bitches Baking. These good bitches aim to make Aotearoa the kindest place on earth by giving a moment of home-baked goodness to those going through a tough time. The book launch at the Tannery next week will act as a fundraiser for them. Sunday morning, I’ll be heading to the Tannery in New Lynn to get the event organised (and eating Kohu road icecream because, reasons).

4 I’m hosting a free Mother’s Day event with Renee on May 11 at Te Manawa in Massey around making memories and celebrating the mess and magic of parenting. On Sunday I’ll be hunkered down in the children’s section making sure we can fit all our props in the space! The destruction specialists are coming so we will return with a stack of kids’ books to read.
