AUCKLAND FISH MARKET

The Auckland Fish Market has been a hive of fishy activity (or should we say a school of fishy activity?) these holidays. This is the last weekend to enjoy the whanau-friendly activities. There are kids’ menus available at the eight eateries, a chocolate fish hunt each day, face painting and balloon making. Plus, there’s lots of good food and wine for the adults to enjoy as well.

Face painting: today, 11am and 2pm. Balloon making: tomorrow, 11am and 2pm. Auckland Fish Market, 22 Jellicoe St, Freemans Bay.

LET’S TALK CREATIVITY

Everyone needs a little inspiration sometimes which is why the PumpHouse Theatre is hosting a series of creative talks over the next few months. Speakers include author Tessa Duder, playwright Gary Henderson and lots more. Soak up some greatness, hear about their process and get your creative juices flowing. Monthly until October. The PumpHouse Theatre, Killarney Park, Takapuna, Auckland. See pumphouse.co.nz for the full schedule of talks.

HITCH’D WEDDING FAIR

For some, a wedding fair is a gruelling form of torture and to you we say: at least there will be alcohol. For the rest of you, Hitch’d Wedding Fair is a two-day wedding bonanza in Kumeu with more than 85 vendors, live music and food and drinks. Getting hitched is serious business, so why not head out west and try to knock a few of those to-dos off your absurdly long wedding list. Today, 10am, noon and 6pm sessions, tomorrow 10am only. Kumeu Showgrounds, 35/41 Access Rd, Kumeu. Tickets $10 from eventfinda.co.nz

FILL YA BOOTS

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, the only way we should be shopping in these terrifying times of climate doom is second hand. There will be lots of good quality stuff to be scavenged at the Grey Lynn Car Boot Market. It’s held on the last Sunday of every month and picking-over the vast and varied selection of pre-loved clothes, collections and curiosities is as much fun, if not more fun, than actually buying something. Tomorrow, 8.30am-11.30am.

Grey Lynn RSC carpark, 1 Francis St, Grey Lynn.

NAUGHTY BUTT NICE

Naughty Butt Nice is the closest you’re going to get to a live taping of Rupaul’s Drag Race this weekend. It’s glamour, it’s comedy, it’s superb lip-syncing and it’s fierce kweens giving it their all. If you need a fun night out, this is the place to be. What’s more, it’s a regular event. Tonight, 8pm.

Level 1, 258 Karangahape Rd, Auckland. $45 per person from phoenix.net.nz

WHANAU FUN

If your children haven’t sucked your life force out of you these holidays, why not round out their school break with a family fun day at Te Atatu Peninsula Community Centre. Captain Festus McBoyle’s Travellin’ Variety Show will be there, along with eightpiece ska/reggae/rocksteady band Surrey Boudit, a kids’ disco by Lee from the 95BFM Kids Show, kapa haka performances, face painting and more. Today, 12.30pm-4pm, Te Atatu Peninsula Community Centre, 595 Te Atatu Rd, Te Atatu Peninsula.

VINTAGE RECYCLED

If buying second hand is more an aesthetic choice than an ethical one, then this is the sale for you. Vintage Recycled in Devonport is having a studio sale, with some really beautiful and unique retro pieces up for grabs. They have everything from mid-century furniture to kitchen items, jewellery and amazing quilts by Renee’s Raggamuffin Quilt. Tomorrow, 9am-3pm. Vintage Recycled, 5 William Bond St, Devonport.

HOZIER

For a while back in 2013/2014, you couldn’t leave your house without hearing Hozier’s debut single

Take Me to Church. The Irish singer/songwriter has since released a steady stream of music showcasing his soulful warble, including his latest EP, Nina Cried Power. He’s performing at Spark Arena and if you hurry you’ll still be able to nab a last-minute ticket. Tomorrow, 7pm. Spark Arena, Auckland. Tickets $89.90 from ticketmaster.co.nz

8 REASONABLE DEMANDS

We’re excited about the brand spanking new theatre production 8 Reasonable Demands, playing at the Waterfront Theatre. It’s about six queer activists trying to change the world in the wake of the Big Gay Out but with some very different ideas on how to do it. Written by Joni Nelson and starring Kierron Diaz-Campbell, Daedae Tekoronga-Waka, Calum Hughes, Lusia Neemia, Courtney Bassett and Sherry Zhang, this black comedy is on our must-see list.

Today, 9pm, tomorrow, 4pm, Monday 7pm. ASB Waterfront Theatre, 138 Halsey St, Wynyard Quarter, Auckland. Tickets $17-$30 from atc.co.nz

FEMINIST ART

Okay, this isn’t news, Guerilla Girls — Reinventing the “F” Word:

Feminism has been on since last month at the Auckland Art Gallery but if you haven’t had a chance to head along yet, this is your official reminder. The exhibition looks at the practices of the gorilla-masked feminist activist collective between 1984 and 2016 and how they used bold, fun and provocative poster art to criticise ongoing biases in art and society. This is the real girl power.

Daily until October 13, 10am-5pm. Auckland Art Gallery, cnr Kitchener St and Wellesley St, Auckland.

Free for New Zealand residents.

THE GANGSTER’S PARADISE

Head down to the Waterfront Theatre for the “hip-hop rom-com musical mash-up” The Gangster’s

Paradise. Written by Leki Jackson Bourke and directed by Fasitua Amosa, this show tells the story of a young wannabe gangster whose only chance to escape expulsion is to take the lead in the school’s production of West Side Story. With a nod to films like Dangerous Minds and Sister Act II, it’s bound to be a hip-shaking good time. Today, tomorrow and April 30, 7pm. ASB Waterfront Theatre, 138 Halsey St, Wynyard Quarter, Auckland. Tickets $17-30 from atc.co.nz

MY ART TIME

Let your kids get creative this weekend at My Art Time at Auckland Art Gallery. Taking place today and tomorrow, kids can take part in some fun art activities and creative projects and maybe meet some other art loving kids while they’re at it. If you’re lucky, it’ll keep them occupied long enough for grown-ups to have a casual stroll around the Gallery unencumbered. Today and tomorrow, 11am-2pm, Auckland Art Gallery, Cnr Kitchener and Wellesley Streets, Auckland. FREE for New Zealand residents.

THE COLLECTOR’S CABINET

A collection of egg cups may not sound like the most fascinating thing on the planet but when that collection belongs to one man and is 9000-strong, including a 19th century Victorian cup and one given to him as a boy in 1939, things start to get interesting. Johnny Green, AKA “the Egg Cup man”, has a selection of his egg cups on display at Alberton. Join him for an informal talk and tea and hear all about his love for — or is it obsession with? — egg cups. Tomorrow, 1.30pm-4.30pm. Alberton, 100 Mt Albert Rd, Mt Albert. Free with admission to Alberton — $10 adults, children and Heritage NZ members are free.
