Back on track

The Napier-Wairoa rail line reopened yesterday, seven years after major storm damage closed the tracks. The line was funded through the Provincial Growth Fund at a cost of $6.2 million. The link connects Wairoa’s forestry industry with the Port of Napier. Services will begin from the end of September, starting with two services a week. KiwiRail says the line will avoid more than 15,000 truck journeys from Wairoa to Napier each year.
