Australians honour Hawke
Thousands of Australians have honoured Bob Hawke, the nation’s third-longest serving leader, in a state memorial service at the Sydney Opera House. Hawke, who died last month aged 89, was Labor Prime Minister from 1983 to 1991. He was described an “inspirational” figure in a service attended by his family and prominent Australians, including five former prime ministers. Hawke won four elections, a record for a Labor leader, and helped modernise Australia’s economy.
