A holiday to stay indoors — away from home

-

Holiday-makers in the North Island could be in for a soaking this weekend.

A heavy rain watch is in place for Northland, northern Auckland, and the Coromandel for today through to Monday.

If you’re staying in Auckland, you’re in for some fine spells today, with isolated showers, but showers are likely to be back tomorrow afternoon and get heavier later in the day.

There is a 40 per cent chance the rain will reach warning levels, which are 50mm within six hours or 100mm within 24 hours;

There could also be gale-force winds in some parts of the North Island tomorrow afternoon.

“It will not be a great afternoon to be out on the Hauraki Gulf,” said MetService forecaster Gerard Bellam.

He also warned that motorists heading out of the city early this morning could run into some fog.

It was a different story further south, where the weather was expected to be more settled.

“It is a country of two islands for Sunday,” Bellam said.

“Rain in the north, showers over most of the North Island. And Wellington and most of the South

Island mostly fine.

“For holiday-makers, the part of the country which is looking the best is the South Island, especially Queenstown and Wanaka,” said the MetService forecaster.

“That would be my pick.”
