Apartment living: Luxury in Grey Lynn

An apartment close to the city offers views of sunsets and boats,

- writes SANDRA GOODWIN

Incredible views, easy living and a nice sense of community sold the young couple who own this apartment in the North complex on its sunny, north- facing charm.

Signwriter James Stead and his student midwife wife Julia didn’t muck around when they had the chance to buy this brand new, air- conditioned apartment in 2018.

James said: “We saw it listed when the original buyer who bought it off the plans was selling it without having moved in and we came here, fell in love with the view and bought pretty much straight away.”

He likes the industrial influences on the architecture of the 42- residence complex, which features exposed tilt- slab concrete panels and dark marble in the foyer and hallways.

He says: “We liked that our views won’t be built out because North sits up on the Grey Lynn ridge, looking down over houses down the valley. We’re on what’s called Level One of the five levels, with twostoreyed townhouses below us.” His favourite spot is beerin- hand on their covered deck, taking in the view, admiring the sunsets and sometimes firing up the barbecue. “We see the sun set on the left above the Waita ¯ keres, look across the neighbourhood and down to boats at Westhaven.”

The couple’s cavoodle Ginger enjoys sunbathing on the balcony too and Grey Lynn Park walks. The couple love having great bars and cafes nearby, heading to Ponsonby Rd’s Chapel Bar or to Ko ¯ kako

Cafe for breakfast.

James says: “The signwriting business I own is just off the motorway in Albany and buying here has make it so much quicker to get to work.”

The location, which has a bus- stop just across the road, is also convenient for Julia with good transport links to her placements at Auckland or Waita ¯ kere hospitals or Birthcare. The apartment comes with one car park and a storage locker, plus they’ve rented another owner’s extra car park. Residents are predominantly owner- occupiers, especially on the North- facing side favoured for its sun.

Their kitchen- living area opening to the deck features tongue- and- groove flooring, a German- made Poggenpol kitchen and has space for the desk Julia studies at. The Smart TV they had mounted to a pillar, so it can be adjusted to view from the lounge or the balcony, will stay with the apartment.

The master bedroom, with a walk- in- wardrobe and ensuite, opens to the deck. The laundry is outfitted with shelving, a Miele condenser dryer and washing machine, which will stay.

The couple envisage a family so will look next for a family home. Bayleys agent Jono King says: “The chance to secure a premium apartment and aspect to match with some of the most breath- taking views across greater Ponsonby is exceptionally rare and a privilege to offer for sale."
