SUBLIME DESIGN
This Auckland Architecture Awards winner is beautifully modernised while remaining sympathetic to its 1920s roots, writes GABRIELLE NOOIJEN
Remuera’s Ranui Rd isn’t in short supply of splendid homes, but few represent such a masterful architectural revision as number fifteen. The 1920s Arts and Crafts home, skilfully altered to earn its name as the “The House of Steel and Light”, following an update conceived by O’Donnell Architects, gained subsequent acclaim in 2013 as an Auckland Architecture Awards winner.
The problem of a poorly spaced and inadequately linked ground floor interior was successfully resolved by Robin O’Donnell Architects, who are known for delivering “uplifting living environments” — the resulting large and light-filled living, kitchen and dining space is precisely that. Both visually stunning and functional, “I think Ranui Rd is one of those rare homes where every inch of the house is regularly used because it is so well designed,” says the owner. It took a complete reconfiguration, and installation of bespoke floor to ceiling Crittall Arnold steelframed joinery to transform the home into an exquisite example of both tradition and modernity.
From the home’s original facade, there’s little indication of what lies behind. The great accomplishment of the building’s design is that it remains in line with Remuera’s architectural framework, successfully retaining its most important traditional features. Ray White agent John Campbell who co-lists the property with Jane Horgan, cites this as one of its best aspects: “The home is beautifully modernised while remaining sympathetic to the original period, it has an impressive pavilion styled indoor-outdoor flow with total privacy.”
The library offers a space for quiet reprieve, “. . . in the late afternoon, with the sun streaming through, it is lovely to open the balcony doors and lie on the couch reading a good book,” says the owner.
Internal paneling, cedar floors, a terracotta tiled roof and a shingled exterior serve to hold the home firmly in its classic origins. The home’s sharply maintained and composed garden features a pool and a tiled entertainment and dining area; it’s bordered by tall, manicured hedges allowing the area complete privacy. In short, it is the ideal entertainer’s property. “We have fond memories of many birthday parties for the children at the house. It has been fantastic for having large family gatherings for a barbecue. The connection between the kitchen and the outdoor area makes entertaining a breeze,” the owner says.
“When you arrive home, you’re presented with a charm that you will never tire of. It is the perfect combination of style and elegance, perfection and privacy. A forever home for all ages and stages. Simply put, this home is breath-taking,” says Campbell.
Set on one of Remuera’s most notable streets, within easy reach of Remuera’s shops and schools, and double Grammar zoned, the property is especially well positioned for families. Sale: Price by negotiation Contact: John Campbell, Ray White, 021 446 889; Jane Horgan, 021 528 818
