New Zealand has temporarily banned travel from India in response to a surge in Covid cases among travellers to this country. Herald readers share their views.

A sensible decision in view of what has happened over the last few weeks. Clearly, something is going badly wrong in the process of leaving India and this needs to be identified and improved for everyone’s sake. This doesn’t change the fact that we can’t stop NZ citizens from coming home, so this will need to be worked through quickly so safer travel can resume. I suspect if the government tries to extend the suspension beyond the end of the month there could be legal challenges.

Isn’t this what MIQ is for? Why has India been singled out? Brazil is a concern — and no suspensions were put on the US or UK as far as I know?

Obviously can’t trust India and its government to contain the spread. If that’s the case, ban travel from there to here indefinitely until Covid is under control globally. 17 out of 23 is outrageous and protecting NZ should be our utmost priority.
Chris Nixon
This is outrageous! Every NZ citizen has the right to return home! Obviously, if they have a positive test they can’t fly but providing they are negative they should be allowed to enter. It’s their fundamental right as a Kiwi!

This is appalling. Offshore New Zealanders have again and again been treated as collateral in an otherwise good job by the NZ Government in dealing with the pandemic. Jacinda needs to realise that she is the Prime Minister for all New Zealanders and not just those living in New Zealand. This is an unprecedented move and a sad day in New Zealand’s history.
