Back when there were no speed limits, we took a Mercedes Benz ML55, BMW X5 V8 and a Porsche Cayenne Turbo to the Northern Territory for top-speed runs. While slipstreaming, the Merc topped 260km/h, the BMW 270 and the Cayenne 280km/h.

How long can I keep going on about my last big pre-Covid international trip, a Land Rover Defender expedition (at 800km off-road it was much more than a launch) in Namibia? At least once more, it seems: right car in the right place at the right time (just).

If we’re talking about using SUVs for their intended purpose, then driving a Suzuki Ignis to the local supermarket should stack up nicely alongside these other tales. No rivers were crossed, or excessive speeds were hit. It was a rather pleasant experience.
