Viva Magazine: How to shine on the night

-

From cocktail attire and diamonds glittering at sunset on the Auckland Museum roof to striding through Wellington’s inner-city streets in psychedelic prints at sunrise, the latest issue of Viva Magazine — Volume Four, on sale nationwide Monday, celebrates the power of the night.

Continuing to breathe new life into the lifestyle magazine market, Viva Magazine is a premium gloss quarterly and off-shoot of the New Zealand Herald’s highly respected weekly Viva magazine. Since launching a year ago, it has carved out a reputation for being thoughtprovoking and bold in its design, content and approach to fashion.

On the cover, leading New Zealand curve model Holly Rose Emery wears $1 million worth of Bulgari jewellery and a Victoria Beckham dress.

This issue explores the revival of the 80s Club Kid scene and its crucial role in today’s creative era, and how surrealism is impacting on current fashion trends.

“There is a sense right now, in this pandemic-riddled world, that people are wanting to dress up and, in some instances, use fashion as a way of escaping reality,” says editor Amanda Linnell. “It makes for a very expressive time for fashion and Volume Four really demonstrates how that’s possible — from mixing designer labels with op-shop finds to creative hair and makeup trends.”

Along with stunning fashion and photography, the 166-page magazine is packed with stimulating reads. Cover model Emery shares her personal experience on the international modelling scene working for the likes of Prada and Vogue, her new focus on body diversity and repositioning herself as a curve model. There is a series of evocative essays exploring life after dark by top New Zealand poet Tayi Tibble, writer Hera Lindsay Bird and Auckland 80s it-girl and writer Judith Baragwanath, along with inspirational stories exploring entertaining at home, interior design, the best bars, stylish travel destinations and more.
