IN THE HEART OF ONEHUNGA
New apartments to be built in the midst of Onehunga’s shops, eateries, pubs and transport links are attracting a diverse range of buyers, writes SANDRA GOODWIN.
Amedley of benefits has fuelled initial sales by a diverse range of buyers into new apartment development The Onehunga Mall Club, destined to rise in the heart of Onehunga Mall.
“We’re well underway with a good level of sales as buyers take advantage of preconstruction pricing,” Colliers Residential Sales Manager Juliet Lichtenstein says.
She says buyers to date are a mix of young professionals, Onehunga locals keen to downsize to a lock-up-andleave residence, first-home buyers and investors recognising the appeal of this location.
Juliet attributes some of this early success to the development’s credentials - this is developer Lamont & Co’s second Onehunga project in conjunction with architects Ashton Mitchell.
The pairing was behind soldout and completed
161-apartment development Fabric of Onehunga, arranged around a pocket park in Victoria Street, for which Ashton Mitchell has just won a 2021 New Zealand Institute of Architects’ Auckland award.
This time their design is for a
102-apartment, eight-storey building benefiting from the diverse views and great convenience on offer from a location in the middle of Onehunga’s shops, eateries, pubs and transport links.
The Onehunga Mall Club will rise at 158 Onehunga Mall where you’ll currently find a low-slung building which formerly housed the Onehunga Workingmen’s Club.
The new development is also known as The O.M.C., in acknowledgment of the workingmen’s club’s WMC logo and history. This address, only around 200 metres from Onehunga’s Train Station, earns it a score of 91 out of 100 on walkscore.com which measures locations’ walkability.
Construction is expected to start later this year for completion in the fourth quarter of 2023. It will offer onebedroom, one-bedroom plus multi-use room and twobedroom apartments and car parking, to be accessed from the building’s Upper Municipal Place entrance, can be purchased separately.
Apartments range in size from 50sqm to 94sqm, almost all further bolstered by outdoor living on balconies or larger terraces.
Ashton Mitchell Project Director Clifford Paul says drones have confirmed the location’s fantastic 360-degree views. “Normally sites we work on are lucky to get one view aspect, but to get four is quite unique,” he says.
The most premium apartments will look west across the Manukau Harbour to Manukau Heads. The northern point of view looks out to One Tree Hill, south across the
Manukau Harbour to Mangere Mountain and ast across the rooftops of Onehunga’s industrial quarter towards Panmure and Mt Wellington.
Clifford says a lot of work went into creating very liveable apartment layouts suiting a variety of buyers, minimising dead space and achieving the optimal balance between good storage and maximising living spaces. He says their design in brick and pre-cast concrete will contribute to the strong heritage values of Onehunga, while also telling the next chapter of the street’s story.
A two-level facade in a more heritage style falls in line with other buildings along the mall, with six levels of apartments set back above that in a tower.
The Onehunga Mall Club’s display suite onsite at 158 Onehunga Mall is open 11am to
3pm, Tuesdays to Sundays.
