Oranga Tamariki was asked if it was aware of Ferro-James’ case; if the boy’s Tauranga kohanga reo should have done more to alert officials when they noticed bruises; if it had reviewed Ferro-James’ case and if anything more could have been done to protect Ferro-James. Oranga Tamariki services for children and families north deputy chief executive Glynis Sandland responded with a written statement. “I would like to acknowledg­e the ongoing grief Ferro-James’ family will feel.”

His death was subject to an active coronial inquiry, she said, which would decide if recommenda­tions should be made to prevent similar deaths in the future.
