CHILDHOOD FAMLY CAR
Dean EVANS
A 1981 Datsun Sunny wagon. After a Kombi, Kingswood and Capri, my mum's sales job forced us into the red four-speed manual with windup windows and no AC: far from ideal on blistering Sydney summer trips to the beach every weekend. I also learned to drive in it.

My parents were inveterate changers of cars and there was some really interesting stuff in there (Fiat 132, Mazda RX-2). But our most important family car was a 1981 Holden Commodore VC Vacationer: the first that was brand new and the car I eventually learned to drive in.

I was spoilt for choice as a child between my grandma’s classic VW Beetle (which is now my Beetle!), my dad’s Ford Falcon ute, and my mum’s Daewoo Leganza (remember those?). Unfortunately, it was the latter that I spent most of my wee years in.
