Supermoon glows over Super City
Early today has been the last chance to see 2022’s final supermoon of the year.
Aucklanders heading into work early yesterday were treated to a spectacular sight of the supermoon, appearing bright while the sky was still dark over the city about 7am.
Pictures of it over Ponsonby about that time show it with a creamy and sometimes bright yellow glow but it appeared duller over the Auckland skyline by the time the sun had risen.
This particular supermoon is known as a Sturgeon Moon — a full moon in August, which gets its name from the large number of sturgeon fish in North America this month.
Timeanddate.com says the moon rose about 5.30pm in Wellington last night and it was expected to set fairly late this morning — just after 8am.
Conditions were perfect to see it in many parts of the country, with clear skies overnight for many.
