OPINIONS: REAR-ENGINED CARS

In the early 1990s there was a famous drag car, a 1969 Fiat 850 owned and driven by Tony Rigoli that ran a twin-cam, turbocharged Fiat 124 turbo engine and nitrous, and did outrageous wheelstands! It was quick, too, for the time, running a 12.1 quarter-mile and it was street legal.

Back in 1998 I drove one of the first Smart ForTwos (although it was just “Smart City Coupe” or “SmartCar” at that time) in the UK: left-hand drive and a real traffic stopper in the West End. I even did the obligatory nose-intothe-kerb parking manoeuvre.

The Volkswagen Beetle would be an obvious choice here, but something like the Chevrolet Corvair is a lot more interesting. The fact that it had a V8 mounted as far back as possible makes me excited, baffled . . . and scared. Maybe I just need to get out and drive one.
