OPINIONS: SOMETHING STARTING WITH A

Dean EVANS

When I was 20, my dad gifted me a 1981 Alfasud Ti, after I destroyed my Nissan Exa turbo. The Alfa had the rorty 1.5-litre twin-carb flat-four, inboard discs and cornered insanely well for a FWD. I certainly reminisce with more affection than I had back then.

Active suspension tech is common now, but I was in awe of the Citroen Xanta Activ in the 1990s, which had anti-roll bars that locked through corners to eliminate body roll. Still the fastest-ever car through the “moose test” too, at 85km/h. Porsche 997 GT3 RS: 83km/h. Alors!

The Mercedes-Benz pure-electric range starts with A: the EQA. This was not only my first BEV, but the first car I reviewed for DRIVEN. And what an induction into motoring writing! I think Dean regrets putting me in that one first, as it set a high standard.
