Police were left red-faced after members of the public caught an undercover officer posing as a window washer to catch drivers committing traffic offences, a tactic slammed as wildly inappropriate. Herald readers shared their views.

Window washing at intersections is forbidden and carries a maximum fine of $150. I’ve seen plenty of officers on their phones while driving. NZ police fantastic role-modelling as usual.

Running red lights is wrong, as is using your phones while driving. Cops go undercover to bust major crime . . . so what’s the issue? If you didn’t partake in unsafe and illegal behaviour, it wouldn’t bother you.

Raewyn McMillan

They seriously have time for officers to be doing this? I feel more important use of police officers time could be found.

Jenny Campbell

This is disgusting. Especially in light of the current crime wave. I’d rather they focused on catching actual criminals, not people checking their phones at the lights.
