OPINIONS: SCHOOL HOLIDAY MEMORIES

In summer, at least, going to Bilgola Beach with Mum driving our Ford Capri, then Datsun Sunny, in 30-40 deg heat with no A/C, to spend the day in the surf on my boogie board with one application of sunscreen, and subsequent sunburn for the next seven days.

We lived in a variety of South Island towns when I was young and road trips to the West Coast were a regular holiday thing. My parents had a succession of Triumphs and my strongest memory is feeling sick in the back;

mostly from reading Spider-Man comics.

School holidays were usually spent driving from Auckland to New Plymouth to visit family. My parents would pile all four kids in the back of the Toyota Previa. To entertain us on the 5-6 hour journey, we’d make a mix CD before we left, with music ranging from AC/DC to Play School and Delta Goodrem.
