Goody goody glumdrops: fans outraged at Tip Top

-

So many other flavours they could have chosen to discontinue but no let’s axe two of our most popular!

Tip Top has discontinued two of its most popular flavours, the 2-litre tubs of Cookies and Cream and Goody Goody Gumdrops, causing outrage among Kiwis online.

An employee for supermarket operator Foodstuffs, which owns Pak’n-Save, New World and Four Square, confirmed to the Weekend Herald last night that the tub range of icecream had been discontinued by the supplier.

Head of Tip Top Ben Schurr told 1News the reason for withdrawing the products was due to “significant cost pressures” on milk and cream.

But New Zealanders took to social media to voice their anger at the decision, with some calling for other flavours to be dropped instead.

“Why oh why would they do this when it’s the top sellers?” asked one confused customer on Facebook.

“So many other flavours they could have chosen to discontinue but no let’s axe two of our most popular! Great business decision there,” wrote another.

Some issued a call to arms while one commenter declared summer was cancelled because of the loss.

“I realise that we all have different views on a number of issues; but we need to put those differences aside and unite to act against this injustice.” “Goody goody gumdrop is an NZ icon, a childhood right of passage! Such a shame for our children and future generations,” added another avid fan.

The move has perplexed some given Cookies and Cream took out the Kids’ Choice Award at the New Zealand Ice Cream and Gelato Awards last month. The flavour’s popularity has endured for years with it voted New Zealanders’ third-favourite icecream flavour in a survey for the Weekend Herald in 2010, while Goody Goody Gumdrops trailed in sixth place.

Dairy owners told the Weekend Herald at the time Cookies and Cream was a favourite and was requested mainly by children, teenagers and young adults.

In the aftermath of yesterday’s news, social media users have vowed to start buying other brands’ similar flavours. “That is the dumbest decision, Tip Top Ice Cream. They are two flavours we buy in our household . Just lost loyal customers,” wrote one commenter.

While another Tip Top fan had a word of warning for the icecream maker.

“Just don’t mess with my Boysenberry Ripple!”
