I got to play with Neal Bates’ Corolla once, which is better than it sounds. Aussie rally champ Bates built a WRC-spec, 2.0-litre aspirated S2000 Corolla, and I had an hour on track while it was in tarmac spec. Was light, lithe and loud, like an AWD Lotus Exige.

Because of my job, people often ask me about sound used-car purchases. They are so very wrong to do that, but that’s another story. So I just tell them that “Toyota Corolla” is always the answer, which I do think is true. Except for when “Suzuki Swift” is the answer.
