Wherefore art Romeo? Sky City Theatre

- Alex Robertson

“What light from yonder window breaks?” Tis the new production of William Shakespeare’s most famous play revived as part of a new season of the Pop-up Globe.

Romeo and Juliet, starring Alistair Sewel and Natasha Daniel as the star-crossed lovers, is on for a limited run at the Sky City Theatre from February 11.

It marks the first season of plays from the Pop-Up Globe company since 2019, with the pandemic bringing the curtain down and plunging it into liquidation. Parting has been such sorrow.

Under the direction of the liquidator, Pop-up Globe is staging two of the Bard’s most popular plays — Romeo & Juliet and Twelfth Night — with a romantic bent, just in time for Valentine’s Day. The performances bring back everything we love about Shakespeare: spectacular costumes, thrilling swordfights, bawdy humour and, most of all, love and all the drama that involves.

Executive producer Tobias Grant says Pop-up Globe is on a mission to come back after being poleaxed by the pandemic.

“This is the first big step in our plan to make that happen. At SkyCity Theatre, we are reuniting our home audience with two fullscale productions in the style they know and love from Pop-up Globe,” Grant said. “When Shakespeare and his own company couldn’t perform at the Globe in London due to plague, they took their shows on tour to existing venues around England. Audiences loved them so much the company made indoor performances part of their seasons in London. We are in a similar situation, so we’re doing the same.”
