John and Pamela Helm detail their first visit to 22 Arney Road, Remuera, and the record time in which they secured the property.

“After an exhaustive search for a home we both liked, I walked into the property and thought ‘this is the house, this is where we want to live’.

“I rang John, he came over, and we made an offer on the spot.”

To follow would be over 30 years of raising their family from very young children to adulthood, in a remarkable home that has adapted to them throughout.

The couple recruited architect Brent Hulena to bring to life a home that would pair with the incomparable harbour view.

“When we first saw the home, we couldn’t believe the views, 180 degrees of an amazing outlook – penthouse views from a family home – but the layout of the home wasn’t great,” describes John.

In 1992, Hulena formed the home that stands today, designed with an emphasis on lifestyle – and he delivered precisely what the couple sought.

“We loved his take on the home and his focus on the view and outdoor living,” says Pamela.

Twelve years later the home evolved once more – again enlisting the help of Hulena – this time with a focus on modernising and adding current aspects, like a temperature-controlled wine cellar and a minimalist kitchen and cabinetry designed by Saul Hoeksema.

“It is a home that has suited the family from small children to teenagers, as the kids grew the rec room by the pool was invaluable for our children and their friends,” Pamela adds.

Characterised by a cedar shingled exterior, domed timber windows and skylights, the three-storied home’s exterior is striking in equal measure with its contemporary and light-filled interior.

A uniform of white walls contrasted with American oak floors present a crisp,

open yet hospitable home with its immediate views of Rangitoto as the central character.

Bedrooms, living rooms and bathrooms are throughout the home, offering plenty of opportunity for both separation and common living.

Certainly, it is a home made for families in every sense.

Large decks, with covered and uncovered areas extend from the house, overlooking the pool of varying depths – perfect for toddlers to adults. And the home’s views are nothing short of guaranteed.

“The properties around the home are owned by the Anglican Church and we have a covenant in place on the land in front of us, it cannot be built on. So, the views are there to stay,” explains John.

Bayleys agent Edward Pack is marketing the property to be sold by a set sale date.

He explains, “Well it starts with the address, which is one of the best in Auckland. It sits high on the western side of Arney Road with breathtaking views.

“It’s a substantial home with immense livability – this home is as good as it gets in the Auckland market.”
